John's layout is built on a number of 2x3ft frames each with its own adjustable legs.

The framework is covered (surpisingly perhaps) with 1/4" thick green plexiglass.

Track is constructed of code 125 nickel-silver rail soldered to 1/2 x 3 x 1/16 in brass sleepers.
