I know, as I write about the dangers of mass immunisation,
that it is a concept that you may find difficult to accept. Immunizations have
been so artfully and aggressively marketed that most parents believe them to
be the "miracle" that has eliminated many once-feared diseases. Consequently,
for anyone to oppose them borders on the foolhardy. For a paediatrician to attack
what has become the "bread and butter" of paediatric practice is equivalent
to a priest's denying the infallibility of the pope.
Knowing that, I can only hope that you will keep
an open mind while I present my case. Much of what you have been led to believe
about immunizations simply isn't true. I not only have grave misgivings about
them; if I were to follow my deep convictions in writing this chapter, I would
urge you to reject all inoculations for your child. I won't do that, because
parents in about half the states have lost the right to make that choice. Doctors,
not politicians, have successfully lobbied for laws that force parents to immunize
their children as a prerequisite for admission to school.

Vaccines are very safe. Most reactions are minor and treatable. There are so few deaths that could plausibly be connected to vaccine and the risk is so small that it is hard to assess statistically. In that case we call it a theoretical risk. Vaccines are as safe today as modern science can achieve. We continually work on trying to identify any possible long-term effects and to make vaccines safer. The fact is that children are much more likely to be harmed by the disease than by the vaccine designed to prevent the disease.

Did you know?
All controlled studies that have compared immunized versus non-immunized children have found either NO relationship or a decreased risk of SIDS among immunized children. Parents concerned about SIDS should be made aware of the Back to Sleep campaign - encourage parents to put their babies on their backs to sleep.
What I've heard:
Multiple vaccinations - giving many baby shots at one time--for different diseases may overload a child's immune system, which helps fight disease.

The issues of multiple vaccinations have been studied
and the WHO will not recommend multiple vaccinations unless studies show the
combinations to be both safe and effective. . Because the immune system is confronted
with foreign antigens every day--multiple vaccinations do not represent much
of an added burden on the immune system that would cause the immune system to
weaken.
"How many shots does my child need?"
This varies from country to country. Follow your national immunization schedule. Most countries include DTP, polio and measles vaccines in the first year. Many others include BCG, hepatitis B, Hib and MMR or MR vaccines. In countries with special epidemiological situations, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis are also included.
"Are the vaccines safe?"
Serious reactions to vaccines are extremely rare, but do occur. However, the risks of serious disease from not vaccinating are far greater than the risks of serious reaction to the vaccination.
"Do the vaccines have any side effects?"
Yes, possible side effects can occur with vaccination: slight fever, rash or soreness at the sight of injection. Slight discomfort is normal and should not be a cause for alarm. Your health care provider can assist you with additional information.
"What do I do if my child has a serious reaction?"
If you think your child is experiencing a persistent or severe reaction, call your doctor or get the child to a doctor right away. Write down what happened and the date and time it happened. Ask your health center to make an official report.
"Why can't I wait until school to have my child immunized?"
Immunizations must begin at birth and most vaccinations
completed by age 2.
By immunizing on time (by age 2), you can protect your child from being infected
and prevent the infection of others at school or at daycare centers. The young
are especially susceptible to disease because their bodies have not built up
the necessary defenses to fight infection.
"Why is a vaccination health record important?"
A vaccination health record helps you and your
health care provider care keep your child on schedule. A record should be started
at birth when your child should receive his/her first vaccination and updated
each time your child receives the next scheduled vaccination. This information
will help you should you move to a new area, change health care providers, or
when your child is enrolled in daycare or starts school. Remember to bring
this record with you every time your child has a health care visit."
