Soya and Genetic Engineering

The biggest soy merger in world history is about to quietly occur, and you will be reading very little information about an event that will forever change the foods WE eat. DuPont is participating in a joint venture with the Bunge company, and will one day control the soybean industry. When the subject of genetic engineering is brought up on the World-Wide-Web in a commentary or article, the name Monsanto is usually included.

Monsanto is everybody's favorite despised gmo (genetically modified organism/or goblin-monster-orc) fall guy. Monsanto merged with Pharmacia and Upjohn. In 2001, their total sales were just over $19 billion. Monsanto is a leader in biotech, to be sure, but an even larger giant quietly lurks offstage. In 2001, DuPont did over $27 billion worth of business to Monsanto/Pharmacia/Upjohn's $19 billion.

DuPont owns the largest genetically engineered seed company in the world (Pioneer Hi-bred), and their future is heavily invested in genetically modified foods. Compare DuPont's $27 billion in business to other companies: Microsoft sold $25 billion worth of software. Walt Disney produced $25 billion entertainment dollars. Coca Cola sold $20 billion worth of product. DuPont, at $27 billion, is one BIG player.

Bunge is the world's largest oilseed processor. DuPont is the world's American chemical company. Bunge and DuPont announced on Monday, January 6th, that they will be "taking advantage of health-conscious consumers' growing demand for soy products." The new venture, called Solae, forecasts annual revenues of over $800 million, and that's just a beginning.

They will also be selling, in their words, "improved soybeans." Just between you and me...I don't want to be eating any of those so-called genetically engineered "improved" soybeans.
