ik werk aan een serie levensgrote portretten van kunstenaars-vrienden-collega’s die ik zie als ‘overlevers’ in de kunstwereld van deze tijd.
deze portrettekeningen, gebaseerd op foto’s die ik van mijn onderwerp neem, tonen steeds twee werkelijkheden: die van de geïnterpreteerde foto en die van de levende herinnering aan en mijn persoonlijke band met / visie op de geportretteerde.

steeds als ik aan zo'n tekening begin, begin ik aan iets dat groter is dan mezelf, zowel in fysieke als infiguurlijke zin. ik teken direct op het papier, zonder overheadprojecties of andere trucs, en al trapje op-en af klimmend, duikend, ga ik als het ware een berg verzetten. ik concentreer me erop dat ik die berg kan verzetten. in de loop van de tijd zal het vermogen tot bergverzetten versterken, door het herhalen van het werkpoces. zo oefen ik me in een houding die me sterkt in mijn relatie tot mijn kunst en die van anderen en in het huidige Nederlandse klimaat waarin die kunst in beginsel moet gedijen.

de grote portretten zijn confronterend in hun positionering. de geportretteerde is ongenaakbaar; strijdbaar en tegelijk kwetsbaar. dat geldt ook voor de aktie van het tekenen zelf en de wijze waarop dat gebeurt.

de portretten zijn getekend met contépotlood en hebben over het algemeen formaat 150 x 210 cm.

I make a series of livesize portraits of artists-friends-collegues whom I see as 'survivors' in the artworld of this time. these drawings, based on photos that I take of my subject, depict 2 realities: the reality of the interpreted photograph and the reality of my personal connection to, and memory of the portrayed person. the portraits are made with contépencil and are sized 150 x 210 cm.

everytime I make such a drawing, I start something that is bigger then myself. physically and metaphorically. I draw directly on the paper from looking at the photograph, not via overheadprojections or other tricks, and by walking up and down little stairs, diving down, I will move a mountain. I concentrate on the fact that I CAN move a mountain. in the course of time the move-a-mountain-ability will expectadly increase, by repeating the workprocess. in that way i train myself in an attitude that strenghtens me in my relationship towards my own art and the art of others, and towards the actual Dutch climate in which this art must firstly develop.

the big portraits are confronting in their positioning. the portrayed person seems impenetrable, soldierly and is at the same time vulnerable. this also counts for the action of the drawing itself and the way in which this happens.

the portraits are made with contépencil and generally have the size 150 x 210 cm.
